We have undertaken consultation work with a wide-range of clients, below are some case studies showing the scope of our work.
Two one-day seminars to by Age Cymru and Oxfam for policy setting. The participants were given a series of presentations on the topic and took part in a series of activities. The St Asaph event was run bilingually using headphones on all the tables and a translator. Fran captured all the discussions and outcomes in visual maps on flipchart stands, the visual maps acting as a record of information which otherwise would have not be recorded. The maps were photographed and included in a review of the events document which Fran designed, and condensed into an email-able pdf format. STM_Seminars
So much value can be gained from bringing a graphic recorder to visual maps events such as this. During the session they increase engagement and add a new fresh (and fun!) dimension to the space as large colourful maps start covering the walls as the session progresses – reflecting the discussions. After the event the document was shared to all participants, providing both seminar attendees with the knowledge and learnings from not only their own session but the other event. They can also be used to share the findings with work colleagues who were unable to attend, and Age Cymru had a vivid record of the events to send to their funders and stakeholders.
Fran created a feedback / evaluation form in a map style, which also acted as an agenda for the day, the aim was to provide another opportunity for participants to tell Age Cymru their thoughts and what they needed from them.
The ‘Big Draw’ Chapter/Cardiff Design Festival
Funded by Admiral Insurance, and as part of the ‘Big Draw’ / Cardiff Design Festival Fran co-designed and led a one day workshop at Chapter Arts Centre, it produced 180+ postcards that were created by a cross-generational group of a participants. She then led 3 days of workshops with Radnor Primary school children aged 4-11 years, who really enjoyed creating really imaginative “Postcards from the Future’, and an animated movie and 10 floor and wall maps. “Amazing creative work and energy”
Hannah Firth, Arts Curator, Chapter Arts Centre
A one-day consultation event with 50+ Learning & Development suppliers in North Wales, the World Café method was used, an amazing sight to see the walls and windows of the venue covered with the giant visual maps at the end of a highly participative, successful day.
“These (maps) are fab – such a great innovative way of working and really symbolic of the whole StF identity! Very successful event!”
DRIVE Tenant Participation Consultation Project
DRIVE, an organisation which provides housing and support to people with Learning Difficulties, commissioned Fran to redesign their logo and communication materials. Person-centred planning is at the core of DRIVE’s work, and it was essential for their service-users staff and stakeholders to be part of the development process. Fran led two one-day workshops using a range of consultation methods, using the results to define the design of the logo. The final 3 concepts were voted on at the AGM in a ‘blind’ system, with ‘winning’ design being the overall choice – this was a very positive result.
At the ‘Include 11′ Inclusive Design Conference in the Royal College of Art Fran presented a paper on the project, the organisers cited the project as ‘an excellent example of the kind of project which is happening and we do not normally hear enough about, a great case study.’ Its published in the conference proceedings book available for download by clicking here: Include 11 Proceedings Book
